What is a Reservoir Tank?
The power steering fluid reservoir or "reservoir tank" is the container that holds the fluid responsible for powering the steering system your commercial vehicle. This simple system is responsible for making sure that you are able to smoothly turn your steering wheel and maneuver your truck in a way that is safest and most comfortable for you while you drive.
How Does a Reservoir Tank Work?
Reservoir tanks are designed to facilitate the movement of liquid through the steering system, making it easier to move the steering wheel under the force of the weight of your truck. The moment you move the steering wheel, the power steering pump pushes fluid into the steering gear. The gear then applies pressure to the tires, helping you turn your vehicle effortlessly around corners.
What Happens if My Reservoir Tank is Leaking or Foaming?
The pressure made inside of the pump can damage the reservoir and potentially lead to leakage. It is also possible that the power steering reservoir will crack and leak when the mileage on the tank is high. A reservoir leak can prevent you from turning your truck with the proper amount of force, and will make it difficult to maneuver your commercial truck.
Foaming in the power steering reservoir is an indicator that air is being sucked into the system through the front seal of the steering pump. It is important to make sure that the reservoir is sealed so that air doesn't get inside the bottle. When air enters the reservoir, power steering fluid will start foaming, making it much harder to maneuver around corners. Steering becomes difficult because the foam will not transmit force. If the foam is not transmitting force, then your steering will become labored, and will no longer work properly.
