How Does A Semi-Truck Steering Pump Work?
As mentioned in previous articles in this series, there are three kinds of power steering systems used in modern trucks: hydraulic, electric, and hybrid. Each of these systems is designed to reduce the force that is required to turn your truck's steering wheel, while making sure the steering ratio is maintained.
The hydraulic power for the steering comes by way of a rotary-vane pump. This vane pump is motivated by the car's engine using a simple belt and pulley system. The system is made with a set of vanes that retract and spin inside an oval-shaped chamber. When the vanes are in motion, they hydraulic fluid is pulled from the return line at low pressure and is then pushed into an outlet at a highly pressurized state.
How Does Fluid Move Through A Steering Pump?
The engine's speed determines the amount of flow the pump provides. The steering pump is designed to flow when the engine is idling. As well, the pump moves faster when the engine is running at higher speeds. The pump contains a valve which releases pressure so that it doesn't get too high, particularly at high engine speeds.
What Are The Symptoms Of A Bad Power Steering Pump?
A bad steering pump can be detrimental to your ability to control and properly maneuver your commercial truck when you are on the road.
