How Does a Camshaft Work?
A camshaft is a rod that is designed to rotate and slide against a piece of machinery. This is so that the engine can turn rotational motion into linear motion. This transformation of motion is accomplished by the camshaft moving further and closer from the axis of rotation as it's pushed by the machinery. Camshafts act as the timing device that controls the intake and exhaust valves. As well, the camshaft sets the valve overlap that occurs at the top on the exhaust stroke.
What Is The Purpose Of A Camshaft?
The camshaft inside of an internal combustion engine controls the input of fuel and the expulsion of exhaust fumes. The entire system consists of several radial cams, each of which is designed to displace intake or exhaust valves. This camshaft is connected to the crankshaft via belt, chain, or gears.
What Do Cams Do For Performance?
No matter what kind of engine you have with a camshaft inside, it controls how the valves open and close. It also helps contain the engine's intake of air and fuel mixture and flow of air. This improves engine performance, fuel economy, cam timing, and emissions.
What Can Damage A Camshaft?
There are several things that can cause damage to your camshaft beyond normal wear and tear. Here are a few common causes of camshaft failure:
1. Insufficient lubrication: Lubricant should be applied liberally to the places in which it is required. Valve train components and camshafts depend on a film of lubricating oil to operate correctly. When this film isn't present due to lack of oil failures can occur.
2. Improper break-in: Detailed break-in instructions will usually be located on the Camshaft Card provided with each set. It is important to read and follow the instructions carefully.
3. Reusing worn components: It is important make sure you replace the tappets when installing a new set of flat tappet cams. Flat tappets ride directly on the cam lobe, which means they can become mated to that specific camshaft. When you reuse your old tappets with your aftermarket camshafts, it often results in failure. It's also important to make sure you replace used strings.
4. Mechanical interferences: The valve train is full of moving parts that all work together in perfect time. If there is some kind interference preventing the these moving parts from doing so properly, something is bound to go wrong.
5. Hardware not torqued to spec: Be sure to always use the hardware supplied by the manufacturer. You will also want to make sure you follow the torque specs as defined by the manufacturer.
