The Benefits of LED Lights

LEDs have gained in popularity since the 1980s and are today one of the most attractive types of lighting equipment for commercial and passenger vehicles. There are several reasons why truckers should consider installing LED lights on their trucks. For one, they are highly visible. With a side-to-side view, truckers will not have a problem seeing running wildlife, signage, or instabilities in roadways and other drivers will not have issues seeing trucks in passing lanes. They are also long-lasting – 50 times longer than traditional halogen lightbulbs reported by Extra Mile International Inc.

Because of their growing popularity, manufacturers have designed different types of LED lights for trucks including plastic, aluminum, and steel – but which type is the right choose for semi-truck drivers? Here's what drivers should know.

Plastic LED Lights

Plastic and aluminum are both non-corrosive materials, butwhat sets them apart is pricing. Plastic is much cheaper to produce and is lightweight compared to aluminum or steel lights. While rusting of the parts isn't a concern, general brake down from the sun and road is and will cause the plastic light to weaken quicker than other types of LED lighting. This means that the light may become less visible over time.

Aluminum LED Lights

Aluminum may be more expensive than plastic or steel, but the benefits are worth the rising cost. As mentioned, aluminum has non-corrosive properties, but what we didn't mention is that the material is resistant to high temperatures making it a good choice when driving throughout the country in the summertime. Aluminum lights are known for being durable and will not crack or melt.

Steel LED Lights

According to Extra Mile International Inc, steel LEDs offer the same durability as aluminum lights but don't have the higher price tag. They can be corrosion resistant like their counterparts, too.

When Shopping for LED Lights

We recommend researching different types of lighting to find the best type of light. While pricing is a contributing factor when shopping online for semi-truck lights, quality should be another concern. Therefore, we suggest searching for LED lights that are sealed beamed with polycarbonate lens to keep away dirt and other debris increasing the longevity of the light and reducing the chance of damage. Checking voltage ratings is also a good thought. LED lights on trucks are usually 12-24 volts. Too low voltage will not optimize visibility while driving. And, of course, warranty should never be overlooked when buying online truck lights.
