Getting To Know Your HVAC – Blower Motors
The heat of the summer months is coming, and you'll want to be prepared for your time spent on the road. That said, it's important to make sure you know how your HVAC system works in order to stay comfortable when you're on long drives. The blower motor is one of the most important components in your system, so it's integral you ensure you know how one works.
If you've been reading our series of articles on the various HVAC systems in your semi-truck, then you've likely been wondering how a blower motor works. Read on to learn more about the blower motor in your HVAC system!
What Is A Blower Motor?
A blower motor is the main electric motor that circulates air throughout the vents. The blower motor is controlled by the relay and switch and when it's working as intended, it can operate at speeds and temperatures the driver sets.
The HVAC blower motor is the component that sends conditioned air from the air conditioner into the cabin. Once the system conditions the air, the blower motor sends it through the system and out the vents in the cabin of your semi-truck.
How Does A Semi-Truck's HVAC Blower Motor Work?
The blower motor is designed to be the fan that moves air through dashboard vents based on the climate system settings and the fan speed selected. Adjusting the fan speed sends a signal through a resistor to the blower motor to either speed up or slow it down.
Power to the blower motor is applied through the resistor unit, and if it fails or has any issues, power will be cut off to the motor. A blower motor without a proper source of power will not be able to produce any air pressure, and as a result the heating and air conditioning system will be left with no air coming from the vents.
Signs Of A Failing Blower Motor
A failing blower motor can disrupt the entire air conditioning process. Bad blower motors can stop the air from cooling or heating your cabin and during the summer months, the last thing you want is warm air blowing from your HVAC unit. If you've been wondering whether your blower motor is working properly, here are a few signs you will need to replace the blower motor in your commercial truck's HVAC system.
- Low airflow coming from the vents.
- The fans only work at certain speeds.
- There's zero airflow from the vents.
Troubleshooting Your Semi-Truck's HVAC Blower Motor
The next step is to make sure that you can troubleshoot your HVAC's blower motor. There are a few things to look out for when determining whether your blower motor may be causing your system to fail. You might hear persistent noises that get louder if you increase the fan speed. This is a sign of a problem with the blower motor in your commercial truck's air conditioning unit. In some cases, you may even notice smoke or smells of burning while driving, in which case you should pull over immediately as this can lead to more serious and costly problems.
If there isn't enough air coming through the vents (hot or cold), then it could be because the blower motor for the fan or a switch or resistor that controls fan speed has gone bad. Another cause might be that the electronically controlled "blend doors" that direct air flow are stuck or broken. IF these problems persist, then you will need to find a replacement blower motor for your air conditioning system.
