If temperatures become too cold and drop below a coiled air line's working temperature, the air lines can lose their ability to stretch and recoil. When air lines lose their stretching ability, more force is applied to the gladhands. This can cause the gladhands to separate or even completely pull away, leading to a loss in air pressure to the brake system. Inflexibility in the air lines can also cause kinking, which can block air to the brake system and permanently damage air lines.
Made of a proprietary blend, Phillips Polar Air line jacketing is designed to surround an air assembly’s nylon tubing and create a barrier from extreme outside temperatures. The extra layer allows lines to remain flexible at -85 degrees Fahrenheit, lower than the standard of -40 degrees F.
The ABS Permacoil from Phillips is recommended for ABS applications and is flexible from -87 degrees F to 150 degrees F (-66 degrees C to 66degrees C).
