10 Most Dangerous States to Drive In Announced

Driving across state lines is always risky for the hard-working men and women in trucking, and in an effort to find out just how risky driving in some states can be, insurance comparison website Insurify gathered metrics from non-commercial driver data from 2.5 million drivers across the nation.

The analysis measured the number of drivers with:

  • Speeding tickets
  • At-fault accidents
  • DUI violations
  • Whether drivers had one or more of these incidents on their driving records.

Other companies, including Verizon, have put out their own versions of this list in the past, but this report has the most recently compiled data. According to an insurance expert at Insurify, the intent of the report was to give truckers a heads up on which states to plan shorter routes through.

Top State for Speeding Tickets: Ohio

Topping the list at #1 for the second year in a row(!) is Ohio. With 16.10% of drivers having speeding tickets, 13.37% of drivers with at-fault accidents, 2.72% with a DUI violation, and 30.35% having at least one of all of these incidents, the Buckeye State has once again claimed the title of Most Dangerous State to Drive In.

The #2 spot, surprisingly, went to another Midwestern state that isn’t too far away – Wisconsin.

Top State for Accidents: Maryland

Over on the mid-Atlantic region of the East Coast, Maryland tops the list of the most at-fault accidents with 14.93% of drivers having this incident on their records. But even though Maryland’s accidents are up, the rest of the analysis puts them a little lower than Ohio in the #8 spot.

Coincidentally, the #7 spot also belongs to the East Coast with Maryland making an appearance this year.

Top State for DUIs: North Dakota

Oh, North Dakota. With 4.76% of drivers in this state having one or more DUIs on their records, it’s the top of the list as far as this specific incident goes. But don’t worry – the Peace Garden state is not on the top 10 most dangerous list at all since the other measured incidents had lower percentages.

So, while truckers should still be cautious driving through North Dakota, there are plenty of other states that are more dangerous.
